According to The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), the recycling rate of imported waste plastics in China will be greatly decreased after China announced big changes in the quality control placed on imported materials in July which is expected to be less than half of the normal level.

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) is the only global recycling industry association and it represents 70 different countries. Its members are world leaders in the supply of raw materials and a key pillar for sustainable economic development, which says that China’s ban has had a dramatic impact on pricing.

According to statistics, in 2016, plastic waste imports in China were about 10.2 million tons, but by 2018 this figure will fall. The total will drop 30 percent to 40 percent and overseas suppliers will find alternative ways to deal with about 6 million to 7 million tons of plastic waste.

It is estimated that there are more than 8,000 tons of plastic materials that are used every year in China, while 21 million tons are recycled locally and 7 million tons of waste plastics are imported. The data shows that the local recycling rate is only about 30%, so improving the waste plastic recycling is very important. 
So far, the waste plastics are mainly from packaging such as household foam packaging, Styrofoam food containers and disposable plastic bags.
